in Zagreb

17 September 2021

Given the bad weather forecast, I decide to take a weekend trip to Zagreb - the only city where the sun is supposed to shine (short spoiler: it really did!). Also, I am excited because I found some places serving gluten free dishes and I want to try them.

Day 5 - Trakošćan & Zagreb

Time to leave Kapela Korenička and drive north, direction Zagreb. Momo warns me about the speed cameras on the route. I will keep that in mind. What gives me more trouble is the heavy downpour that I encounter shortly after Slunj. I have to drive considerably slower and turn on my windshield wipers at the highest level. Uff, I don't like it. Anyway, after a three-hour-drive, I finally arrive at Castle Trakošćan - I squeezed this visit in because my Airbnb isn't ready for occupancy until around 5pm. The weather is still crappy, so I enjoy exploring the interior of the 13th century castle. But after an hour, I'm done. Oh no! There are three more to pass. What to do? The only idea I have is to take a walk by the lake in the forest park. Of course, no one else is as crazy as me and goes for a walk in the heavy rain (they just don't want to get wet, sissies), but I really enjoy it.

Walking alongside the lake takes about an hour (5km).

Zagreb At night

In the evening, the rain has stopped, so I can stroll around Zagreb without getting soaking wet again. My Airbnb is a just ten minutes' walk to the cathedral which is a definite must-see at night.

Vis-à-Vis by Vincek

But more importantly: I am super hungry. I've already searched the Internet for places that offer gluten-free food, and I found a small café near the center of town. It's called Vis-à-Vis by Vincek and offers pastries, cake and ice-cream. That will be my first place to go.

It's a magical place for anyone looking for something gluten-free. There are so many options that it's hard to decide what to try first. I Even though everything tastes wonderful, it's a bit much sugar for my body and I feel like I need a real dinner.

I settled for the Mega Protein - a powerful combo of grilled tempeh and farmmade tofu with BBQ sauce, green vegetables and cooked sweet potato.

Here is my humble list of things to do while staying in Zagreb (of course, there are many more things)

  • Discover the city's tunnel system: There is a whole network tunnels hidden underneath Zagreb’s “Upper Town” but only Grič Tunnel is the only part that is open to the public. They were once built to shelter civilians from air raids, today you can get lost in them.
