MissViaggio in Berlin

13 July 2022

Berlin is special in many ways. It is the only German city that was divided for almost 30 years but has managed to grow together again. Berlin is also a city that is full of diversity, which is also reflected in the restaurant scene. And it is open to accommodate the dietary needs of its visitors. So, as a celiac I had a really good time.

Tapiocaria

We decided to try out the local gluten-free restaurant scene and found a Brazilian restaurant in Friedrichshain, Tapiocaria. Since its opening in 2019, it has been serving authentic Brazilian food, but all regular dishes are gluten-free. Heavenly, if you ask me. We tried many different dishes, for example the Brazilian cheese rolls or the cassava dough croquettes filled with jackfruit and cassava fries. So, I can highly recommend a visit.

What to Do in Berlin?

  • Start your day with a walk along the Berlin Wall. It is impressive to see this four meter high wall and try to imagine the times when it was not possible to go from East to West.

  • Visit the Gardens of the World in East Berlin and combine it with a cable car ride offering beautiful views over the ten themed gardens and Marzahn.

  • Learn about Germany's brutal history and visit the Sachsenhausen concentration camp in Oranienburg. It's one of the most depressing places I've ever been, and it's really a lot to take in (especially when it comes to medical experiments on Jewish children and the mass shootings), but it's also a reminder of what must be prevented at all costs in the future.

Jute Bäckerei

A cozy place for breakfast is the small bakery Jute Bäckerei in Prenzlauer Berg. We were a little late so the sandwiches were already sold out, but we found some other nice options like bagels and muffins. We both fell in love with the coconut banana muffin "Mila". And before we left, we bought some more snacks (cranberry cookies and brownies).

Kiez Vegan

Kiez Vegan is the perfect place to recharge your food batteries with healthy and delicious food. You can choose from a rich buffet. But beware. Not every dish is gluten-free. However, the staff is knowledgeable and very helpful. I opted for the baked eggplant and vegetable stew.

One Day in Potsdam

We made use of the 9-Euro ticket and took a ride to Potsdam to visit Sanssouci Palace. Visitors have the opportunity to visit the royal home of Frederick the Great and admire the elegant and beautifully decorated interiors of the palace. Frederick the Great loved to spend his summers at Sanssouci in the company of his dogs.

Oshione

We tried another gluten-free bakery, Oshione, this time located in Kreuzberg. The owner, Aureen, was diagnosed with gluten and lactose intolerance in 2015 and had to cut out all wheat and all dairy from one day to the next (a drastic change, as other celiacs know). She began experimenting with ingredients, gained more confidence in making healthy products, and eventually opened her own bakery. Thank God, because buns, cakes, and pastries are amazing. We tried the pizza and the cinnamon buns made with sourdough and we must say that it is one of the best pastries we have ever eaten.

The pizza was so good that we went back for more.
